| DJ Salty AKA Rebecca Cherkoss, hails from the west coast of North America. Originally from Los Angeles, Rebecca migrated to the San Francisco/BayArea in early 1996 where she stayed till 2000 - loving it, loving it and also, loving it. From there she returned to Los Angeles/Long Beach, where she currently resides. A collector of vinyl since the early 80s's, Rebecca spent the majority of her time during junior and high school hanging out in DJ shops, club hopping and listening to lots of radio, especially the early hip hop pioneer K-DAY am radio. Always the one to distribute and dispense tunes at any event, she began entertaining audiences at college parties with one turntable, a cd player and a tape deck. Hey now! She had been trying to buy a nice, inexpensive set of Technics for years down south without success, but within months of her move to San Francisco, the aspiring DJ finally got her first pair of Technics 1200s! It was a long way from the Fisher Price turntable she received at age 5. But first, the girl needed a tag, right? While initially using the name "Queen B", Rebecca discovered that Lil' Kim was also using the moniker, so she decided to go for something more sublime and Salty was the winner. Salty ADJ 1: engagingly stimulating or provocative; "a piquant wit"; "salty language" [syn: piquant] piquant \Pi"quant\, a. Stimulating to the taste; giving zest; tart; sharp. During her memorable stay up north from 1996 - 2000, Salty worked with amazing peoples like Ill Media AKA Mark Reitman, who would change her life forever by helping her learn how to DJ, Bruno Ybarra who was another DJ/Producer who later formed the soulful house label Naked Music and the many members of Slack Mob. She worked with groundbreaking crews like Sister SF (an all female DJ collective), produced promos for the Production Department at KUSF, read the news for the Turkish Radio Program on KUSF and interned in the Marketing and Promotions Department at Om Records. In 1998, Salty took some away from the office world and spent 4 months living in Capetown, South Africa. She brought a solid selection of underground hip hop with her and began spinning regularly at spots like Lola's and at the Pickle Brothers/Ghetto 3000 events. She guest dj'd on capetown radio stations (Bush radio, Radio Metro, Good Hope Radio, UCT Radio) and started an all-female Hip Hop Collective, Ladybug Crew. Salty met many incredible DJs, music heads and beat junkies in South Africa and found a vibrant hip hop scene. This was also the time that she started digging house music. Upon returning to Los Angeles in 2000, Salty met up with the incredibly cool kids that make up dublab.com. After many months of hound-ation, Hoseh and Frosty gave Salty her own show - The Salty Solution. In 2002, she ran an all-female DJ monthly with Virginia Slim called Feminine Product which featured an eclectic mix of music and DJs.
